As officers approached the suspect, the man opened fire, striking multiple officers. As officers returned fire, more shots struck additional officers. Of those, eight cases are being reviewed by the district attorney and may be removed from the count. CMPD touted its homicide unit's 80% solve rate over the last five years, claiming that number is significantly higher than the national average of 52%. That same month, three officers in Baton Rouge, La., were killed, and three others were wounded in what the authorities described as an “ambush.” The gunman was killed during a shootout.

Officers Are Shot, 4 Fatally, While Serving Warrant in Charlotte

A suspect was killed in a shootout with police, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) released its first-quarter crime statistics for 2022, showing a slight increase in overall crime, violent crime and property crime from this time last year. The other wounded officer was identified Tuesday by the Statesville Police Department as Statesville police Cpl. Casey Hoover, who was also a member of the task force. Hoover suffered a gunshot wound to an area of his upper torso that was unprotected by his bulletproof vest, Statesville police said in a news release. He underwent surgery and is stable and expected to make a full recovery, police said. Two other slain law enforcement officers, identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, were from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction assigned to the task force.

Jennings said investigators are still piecing together a timeline and he wouldn't rule out the possibility that someone else also fired shots. The CMPD’s Transportation Division is reporting arrests, citations, and vehicle seizures linked to “street takeovers”. The trend involves groups of drivers shutting down intersections to perform reckless driving stunts like burnouts, drifting, and doughnuts. Since February, CMPD has made 11 arrests, issued 78 citations, and towed 34 vehicles linked to street takeover incidents. The department will continue to pursue every legal avenue available to hold reckless drivers accountable, including vehicle seizures.

"These are people that care deeply about what they've done for profession, and now today, we have to say to them how much we are grateful for what they have done," Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said. The CMPD SWAT team was at the scene and working through the incident. MEDIC's mass casualty unit was also seen heading to the shooting scene.

However, an encouraging note from Chief Johnny Jennings highlighted a 5% decrease in violent crime last year. Still, Jennings promised CMPD would still fight to keep it down. Charlotte has a poverty rate that stands at 11.9, in contrast to the national average of 15.1. Historically, a direct correlation has been observed between poverty rates and crime stats. Higher poverty rates have led to higher crime rates, while lower poverty rates have led to a reduction in Charlotte crime rates. Income disparities and heightened poverty levels can serve as catalysts for elevated or reduced criminal activity, as individuals may or may not turn to illicit means to fulfill their basic needs.

CMPD said these numbers can be traced back to the "Kia Challenge" of 2022 that led to a nationwide surge in stolen Hyundai and Kia models. The Crime Indices range from 1 (low crime) to 100 (high crime). In February, two police officers and a paramedic were killed near Minneapolis after a man, who was barricaded in his home, opened fire on the police. Officers returned fire, and the gunman was later reported dead.

The number of underage victims of gun violence saw a sharp increase as well, going up 18% from the year before. Those victims include 8-year-old Olivia Velez, who was shot in the head when her family's home was shot into in April. CMPD said that case is believed to be the result of a dispute between groups of young people. CMPD says the majority of car thefts were being committed by teenagers, with juveniles making up 68% of all stolen car arrests. This month, two police officers were killed outside a home near Syracuse, N.Y., during a shootout after they were following up on a traffic violation.

Many of the cars stolen happened during the summer around the time a TikTok video challenged people to steal Kias and Hyundais. The department touted gun seizures as part of its successes in cutting down on violent crime; such seizures were up 8% in 2022, with more than 3,000 guns taken off of Charlotte's streets. Other highlights from CMPD included tackling reckless bike groups, street racing, illegal gambling, catalytic converter thefts, stolen vehicles, and more. New details emerged a day after police said four law enforcement officers were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, while trying to serve a warrant Monday afternoon.

During Thursday’s press conference, CMPD also said arrests have been on the rise compared to 2022, with 11,634 so far this year compared to 10,327 last year. For example, in 2023, 582 of 838 auto theft arrests were juvenile suspects. Now, Darrell Gregory, who leads Youth Based Strategies of Mecklenburg County, says a lot of small community groups working on reducing violence have been overlooked by CMPD, the city, county and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Tyler Wilson told CBS affiliate WBTV he was working at home when he heard officers calling for someone to come out of a neighboring house. Eyer, who had been with the department for six years, "fought for his life for several hours before succumbing to his injuries," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement.

Four members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were also shot, one of whom died from his injuries on Monday night, the police said on social media. The officer, Joshua Eyer, who had been with the department for six years, was helping other officers arrest the suspect when he was shot, the police said. Cooper offered his condolences to the law enforcement officers shot on Monday. During Tuesday's news conference, Jennings said Hughes fired shots at officers from the upstairs of the home in both the front and the back.

When the standoff was over, a female and a 17-year-old were found inside the house and were brought to a police station as persons of interest, Jennings said. A later statement said both individuals were female and that they had exited the home following negotiations with a SWAT team. The man then left the house while armed, police said, and officers opened fire and shot him in the front yard, where he was pronounced dead. When officers approached a house to arrest the suspect, they were immediately met with gunfire and they returned fire, Jennings said. News conference, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said three U.S. marshals had been killed, and a fourth injured.

Conversely, neighborhoods on the city's outskirts tend to boast lower population density, along with reduced unemployment and poverty rates, contributing to a safer environment. Among the secure neighborhoods in Charlotte are exemplars such as Eastover, Wessex Square and Hembstead, whereas Pinecrest, Lincoln Heights and Lakewood grapple with an above-average reported crime rate. This underscores the necessity for thorough evaluation across multiple neighborhoods, given their notable variations in crime rates. Charlotte ranks among the bottom 10% of all U.S. cities reporting violent crime, earning its reputation as one of the nation's most dangerous areas.

There have been 74 homicides reported by CMPD so far this year. AreaVibes has conducted polls asking local residents if they feel safe living in Charlotte. Based on the results of the surveys (328 responses), 30% of people felt that there was very little crime in Charlotte and felt safe walking alone at night.
